Este diccionario presenta por primera vez el "quién es quién" en la literatura infantil y juvenil de Latinoamérica, pasando por todos y cada uno de los países de habla hispana y portuguesa, desde los orígenes hasta nuestros días. De cada autor se recoge la biografía, un análisis de las principales obras y noticias del resto, y un juicio crítico.

Historia de la literatura infantil en América Latina


Se compone de veintiún capítulos, uno por país, ordenados de norte a sur. Comienza el libro con México, analizando el país desde la época azteca hasta el día de hoy. Le siguen los países de Centro América y el Caribe. Más tarde recorre Colombia, Venezuela, Brasil, los países andinos, Perú, Ecuador y Bolivia, y sigue avanzando hacia el sur del continente para finalizar con Chile.
En cada uno de los capítulos se describe el desarrollo de la literatura infantil desde la época indígena, con sus mitos y leyendas transmitidos por tradición oral, pasando por el periodo de la colonia con sus libros infantiles morales y didácticos, el siglo XIX que marca un despegue de la literatura infantil europea, el siglo XX con los precursores del género hasta el inicio del siglo XXI con las más recientes tendencias, principalmente el cuidado de la naturaleza, el humor absurdo o el realismo social. Al término de cada capítulo hay una conclusión y una bibliografía que puede orientar a los que quieran profundizar más en los temas propuestos.
